We want to support our colleagues when they are unable to attend work due to ill health. You will also find further details of our sickness absence processes within your contract of employment.
Abuse of sickness absence, including failing to report absence or falsely claiming sick pay will be treated as misconduct under our Disciplinary Procedure.
This policy does not form part of any employee’s contract of employment and we may amend it at any time.
Telling us when you are unable to attend work
If you cannot attend work because you are sick or injured, you should speak to your manager as early as possible and no later than 9.30 am.
When will you need to visit your GP?
For absence of more than a week (5 days) you must obtain a certificate from your doctor (a ‘sick note’) stating that you are not fit for work, giving the reason. You should continue to provide certificates for the full period of your absence.
If your doctor provides a certificate stating that you “may be fit for work” you must inform your manager immediately. We will speak with you about how to facilitate your return to work, taking account of your doctor’s advice. If appropriate measures cannot be taken, you will remain on sick leave.
Statutory Sick Pay
You may be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) if you satisfy the relevant statutory requirements. Qualifying days for SSP are Monday to Friday, or as set out in your employment contract. No SSP is payable for the first three consecutive days of absence. It starts on the fourth day of absence and may be payable for up to 28 weeks.
Return to Work Interviews
After a period of sick leave your manager may hold a return-to-work interview with you. The purpose of these interviews is: for us to make sure you are fit for work; discuss how we can support you; confirm you’ve given us the appropriate paperwork; update you on what is happening at work and raise any concerns about your absence.
Occupational Health and Medical Examinations
Where appropriate, we may discuss a referral to an occupational health assessment service, GP or specialist. Occupational health services help provide employers with the information they need to support a return to work and manage absence. Where needed, we will ask for help in developing a return-to-work plan and/or provide a medical report. We will provide you with further details at the time.
